The mission of the African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries Incorporated is to develop servant leaders in the church and community who reconcile and transform lives affected by violent conflicts and injustice.
Funding Request
Amount of Request: $7,400
The funds will be used in meeting the identified needs of 22 elderly African immigrant and refugee who have been identified by the Congolese, Burundian, Rwandese, Sudanese, and Ethiopian Refugee congregations at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dallas, Bethel Lutheran Church of Dallas, African Missionary Congregation of Dallas, and Episcopal Church of Garland.
African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries Incorporated have a department that focuses on Immigrant and Refugee Family Services. One of the services is for elderly immigrant and refugees which focuses on three areas: (1) Health and Wellness Services, (2) Relief and Financial Assistance Services, and (3) Get Outside, Recreation, and social life Services. The funds will be used to support the elderly African immigrant and refugees in three areas of services to these most vulnerable in our society:
- Health & Wellness Services ($2,600) to increase health literacy for elderly African immigrants to build their capacity to live healthily by empowering them to read, understand, and use healthcare information to make appropriate health decisions, follow medical advice and instructions for treatment, address mental health, overcome the traumatic experience of war, boost resilience, and empower conflict-affected elders to become agents of tribal and racial reconciliation.
- Relief and Financial Assistance Services (2,500) to promote well-being and support the elderly to afford the food and medicine they need to stay healthy while teaching them how to manage their limited financial resources and protect elders from fraud and financial exploitation.
Get Outside, Recreation, and social life Services ($2,300) to ease feelings of abandonment, anxiety, isolation, and to prevent disease and reduce the risk of falls and other physical injuries. The outdoor activities will help to improve memories, fight depression, lower blood pressure of the elderly citizens as they participate in leisure activities such as relaxing, hobbies, walking, reading, gardening, hiking, visiting amusement parks, recreational centers, and spending time with families or friends.
