In May 2025, ALARM Inc. launched a transformative Gender Equality, Reconciliation, and Partnership (GERP) training in Hoima City, Western Uganda—equipping 38 church leaders and their spouses with knowledge and tools to confront gender inequality within their churches and communities.
This groundbreaking three-day workshop, held from May 6–8, brought together pastors, pastresses, and church influencers—many of whom are alumni of ALARM’s Pastoral Leadership Training Institute (PLTI). With its contextual approach rooted in biblical reflection, the training enabled participants to explore gender justice from both a spiritual and social perspective.

Facilitated by Ms. Fidelis W. Karanja (ALARM Africa’s Director of Grants Acquisition and Management), Rev. Stephen Olika (Country Director, ALARM Uganda), and Ms. Betty Tumukunde (Program Administrator), the training tackled key issues including:
- Gender stereotypes and roles in the church and home
- Biblical foundations for gender equality
- Cultural norms that perpetuate injustice
- Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and its far-reaching effects
- Action planning for long-term transformation
The curriculum encouraged reflection, dialogue, and immediate action. Participants examined scriptures such as Genesis 1:27 and Galatians 3:28 to dismantle long-standing theological misinterpretations that marginalize women. They learned how Jesus’ inclusion of women like Mary Magdalene, Martha, and Priscilla exemplified God’s intent for equity.
What made this training unique was its deep emotional impact. Pastors, teachers, and couples alike shared how the workshop opened their eyes to harmful patterns they once accepted.
“Now I understand, and I’m ready to teach others.”
– Ms. Kagyanzi Scovia, Pastress & Primary School Teacher, Kakumiro District
“Before attending ALARM’s training, I was completely unaware of gender issues. I didn’t know the difference between sex and gender, or how cultural and institutional norms contribute to inequality and violence—especially in schools, families, and churches.
Thanks to the GERP training and the patient, thoughtful facilitators (including the use of a local language translator), I now understand these concepts deeply. As a teacher and church leader, I’m committed to teaching my pupils and congregation about fairness and equality in line with God’s vision for His people.
Thank you, ALARM, for the care, the hospitality, and for opening my eyes.”
“We are going to lead with love and fairness.”
– Pastor Couple: Mrs. Nyalwinyi Jennifer & Mr. Businge Moses, Hoima District
“We were thrilled to be invited to the GERP training. Honestly, we didn’t realize how much we misunderstood gender issues until we saw them clearly through this biblical and cultural lens.
Jennifer shared how she now understands the difference between equity and equality—and how this will change how she leads at home, in the church, and within the community. Moses added that he now sees how he can be a better husband and leader by supporting his wife and ensuring fairness in their ministry.
This training helped us recognize past blind spots, and we’re committed to creating a marriage and ministry rooted in God’s justice.”
“This was a wake-up call.”
– Pastor Katumba Julius, Walukuba Christian Fellowship Church, Buliisa District
“Before the training, I didn’t understand what gender even meant. I had never considered how harmful gender-based violence could be—not just for women, but also for men and children. ALARM didn’t just tell us; they equipped us with a full curriculum and walked with us through every step.
I now see how I was unconsciously contributing to bias and inequality. This was a wake-up call. I am motivated to teach these truths to my family, my church, and the broader community in Buliisa. I pray ALARM can bring this training to more leaders—we need it desperately.”

What’s Next, and How You Can Help
The need for ongoing GERP training in Western Uganda is urgent. Participants recommended translating the curriculum into Lunyoro to reach more communities and suggested issuing certificates to validate learning and inspire action. ALARM is committed to scaling this initiative—but we cannot do it alone.
With your partnership, we can:
- Extend training to underserved regions
- Translate materials into local languages
- Equip more church leaders as advocates for gender justice
- Sustain impact through community outreach and follow-up programs
