Strengthening Community Healthcare in Rwanda: How Partnership Is Improving Lives in Cyimbili

Through a partnership between ALARM-Rwanda, CompassionNow, and the Cyimbili community, local healthcare services are reaching more people, strengthening disease prevention, and improving access to essential medical care.

Access to quality healthcare can make the difference between a family recovering from illness and one falling deeper into vulnerability. In Cyimbili, Rwanda, ongoing efforts to strengthen community healthcare are helping address this challenge by improving health services, increasing awareness of disease prevention, and supporting vulnerable families.

Through the Community Services Improvement Project, ALARM-Rwanda, in partnership with CompassionNow and the local community, continues to support Cyimbili Health Center (CHC) in improving healthcare delivery and responding to the health needs of the surrounding population.

More Than 7,000 Patients Receive Medical Care in Three Months

Between July and September 2026, Cyimbili Health Center treated 7,092 patients for various health conditions, including respiratory infections, malaria-related symptoms, intestinal parasites, pneumonia, and other illnesses.

Women and children accounted for a significant proportion of those seeking care, with the health center reporting increased cases of acute respiratory illnesses among children and a rise in malaria cases following the beginning of the rainy season.

During the same quarter, the health center’s wider outreach and community health activities reached 14,120 people, extending healthcare support beyond the facility and bringing preventive health information closer to families.

These figures demonstrate the important role of community-based healthcare facilities in ensuring that vulnerable populations can access essential services.

Taking Disease Prevention Beyond the Health Facility

Recognizing that healthcare goes beyond treating illness, Cyimbili Health Center intensified community outreach and education activities, particularly in response to increasing malaria cases and child malnutrition.

Community members, schools, churches, pregnant women, and families were engaged through health education and mobilization activities. These initiatives focused on malaria prevention, proper nutrition, early treatment, and the importance of maintaining health insurance.

Vulnerable mothers and children received nutritious food and porridge, alongside education on preparing balanced meals to address malnutrition and childhood stunting. Pregnant women were also supported through consultations and mosquito net distribution.

Community health workers and supporters received training to strengthen their knowledge and skills in responding to major health concerns within their communities.

By taking these interventions into homes, schools, churches, and other community spaces, the project is helping families make informed decisions that contribute to healthier lives.

Strengthening Healthcare Through Improved Technology

An important achievement during the quarter was the installation of internet connectivity at the Cyimbili Health Center satellite health post, alongside the purchase of a laptop for the health center.

These investments are improving the facility’s ability to access and share health information, prepare reports, and retrieve updated patient records through the Ministry of Health system.

For the satellite health post, internet connectivity means faster and more reliable information sharing with the wider healthcare system. The laptop is also helping health center personnel improve administrative processes and reporting, supporting more efficient service delivery.

While these improvements may appear small, they contribute to building a stronger healthcare system that can respond more effectively to community needs.

Addressing the Challenges Facing Vulnerable Families

Despite the progress made, significant challenges remain.

Shortages of medicines, medical supplies, and essential equipment continue to affect healthcare delivery. The health center has also experienced difficulties serving patients who cannot afford medical insurance or pay for treatment.

Rising living costs and increased health insurance premiums have made it harder for many families to maintain coverage, limiting their ability to access affordable medication and other services.

Malaria and malnutrition also remain major public health concerns. The health center has identified the need for expanded prevention campaigns, adequate mosquito nets, effective malaria medication, and continued nutrition education.

These challenges highlight why sustained investment in community healthcare is essential, particularly for families already facing economic hardship.

Continuing the Commitment to Better Healthcare

Looking ahead, Cyimbili Health Center has identified several priorities, including securing essential medicines and medical supplies, improving the health center’s infrastructure, and expanding community health education.

Another priority is supporting health insurance coverage for at least 20 vulnerable families comprising 126 members, helping them access healthcare without the financial barriers that often prevent timely treatment.

The project also seeks to strengthen psychosocial support and spiritual care for patients and community members as opportunities for public gatherings and community engagement allow.

A Partnership That Makes Healthcare More Accessible

The progress in Cyimbili demonstrates what sustained partnership can accomplish. Through CompassionNow’s financial support, facilitated by ALARM, the health center has been able to respond to pressing medical needs, strengthen its systems, and extend preventive health services to the wider community.

The impact is reflected not only in the thousands of patients treated but also in families gaining knowledge about disease prevention, mothers learning how to improve their children’s nutrition, and healthcare workers becoming better equipped to serve their communities.

ALARM is grateful to CompassionNow for investing in this work and to the Cyimbili community and health center staff whose commitment continues to make these improvements possible.

Together, we can strengthen local healthcare systems, reduce barriers to essential medical services, and help more vulnerable families build healthier and more hopeful futures.

When communities have access to quality healthcare, the impact extends beyond individual patients to families and entire communities.
