The Kanazi Reconciliation, Forgiveness, and Resilience Group in Bugesera District continues to strengthen peace, unity, and resilience among survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, former prisoners, perpetrators, and their families. Members work together to rebuild trust, support one another, and improve their livelihoods.

One of the group’s successful activities is its livestock support program. Families receive goats or chickens, which they raise and multiply. As the goats and chickens reproduce, beneficiaries pass some of the young goats or chicks to other members through the “Umwe Azoroza Undi” initiative. This approach helps more families improve their livelihoods while promoting sharing, cooperation, and reconciliation.

One family that received a goat and a chicken has seen them multiply, increasing household income and strengthening relationships with other group members. Another member expanded his chicken-raising project and now plans to invest in goats, with the long-term goal of owning a cow.

The group has also established a Savings and Loan Association, where members meet every Friday to save together and access small loans. This initiative supports small businesses while encouraging cooperation, mutual support, and regular opportunities for members to share their progress and challenges.

Although the group remains committed to helping vulnerable families by constructing and rehabilitating houses, this activity is temporarily on hold following guidance from Bugesera District authorities. Members continue to contribute their labor and community spirit while awaiting authorization to resume the work. Support from ALARM remains essential in providing construction materials that the community cannot afford on their own.

Through these social and economic initiatives, the Kanazi Group continues to promote reconciliation, strengthen community relationships, and improve the well-being of its members and vulnerable families.
