Raising Awareness, Saving Lives: ALARM-Congo Advances Breast Cancer Awareness at Brenda Tailoring Centre

Every woman deserves access to lifesaving health information, compassionate care, and the opportunity to make informed decisions about her health.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, ALARM-Congo brought this message to young women at Brenda Tailoring Centre/ALARM in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), organizing an educational session to raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

Led by ALARM staff member Syza, the session helped students understand breast cancer, recognize potential warning signs, and appreciate the importance of seeking timely medical advice. Participants were encouraged to consult qualified healthcare professionals and visit appropriate health facilities for breast health guidance and screening when recommended.

The interactive discussion provided a welcoming space for students to ask questions, share reflections, and learn how informed health decisions can make a difference. The students welcomed the initiative and expressed their commitment to taking their health more seriously and encouraging others to do the same.

When young women have access to reliable health information, they are better equipped to protect their well-being, support their peers, and share important health messages within their families and communities.

Turning Personal Loss into a Legacy of Hope

For the Brenda Tailoring Centre/ALARM community, this initiative carries a deeply personal meaning.

The awareness session was also an opportunity to remember Penina, a beloved former teacher at the Centre who sadly passed away following breast cancer.

Penina’s life and memory remain part of the Centre’s story. Her passing is a painful reminder of the importance of health education, timely medical attention, and compassionate support for women affected by breast cancer.

Although we cannot change the past, we can honor her memory by helping other women access information and support that may guide them toward timely medical care.

Through initiatives like this, ALARM-Congo hopes to take breast cancer conversations beyond medical facilities and into the communities where women live, learn, work, and raise their families.

Taking Awareness Beyond the Classroom

For women in vulnerable communities, access to reliable health information and appropriate medical services can be challenging. Financial limitations and other barriers may prevent women from seeking medical attention when health concerns arise.

Awareness is an important first step, but it must be accompanied by access to qualified healthcare professionals, appropriate screening, and timely follow-up care.

ALARM-Congo is committed to expanding community health education and building partnerships that help women and girls access the guidance and services they need.

With additional support, the initiative hopes to:

  • Expand breast cancer awareness and education in vulnerable communities.
  • Provide accessible, culturally appropriate educational materials.
  • Connect women with qualified healthcare professionals.
  • Help reduce financial and practical barriers to recommended screening services.
  • Build lasting community support for women affected by breast cancer.

Help Turn Awareness into Action

The response from students at Brenda Tailoring Centre demonstrates the value of community-based health education. However, reaching more women requires resources, partnerships, and collective commitment.

ALARM-Congo invites individuals, churches, foundations, healthcare professionals, and organizations to partner in expanding breast cancer awareness and facilitating access to appropriate screening services for vulnerable women and girls in the DRC.

Financial contributions can support awareness activities and access to healthcare. Healthcare professionals can offer their expertise, while churches and organizations can help mobilize resources and strengthen community partnerships.

Together, we can honor Penina’s memory by creating opportunities for more women to receive essential health information, seek appropriate care, and support one another.

Every woman matters. Every life has value.

Stand with ALARM-Congo in turning awareness into action, compassion into partnership, and hope into meaningful change.

Partner with us to expand breast cancer awareness and improve access to appropriate healthcare for vulnerable women and girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
