Breaking Cultural Barriers: Advancing Women’s and Girls’ Rights in Eastern Congo

On March 3, 2026, African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries (ALARM), through its Peacebuilding Department and Legal Clinic, hosted an Exchange Forum on Women’s Rights at the ALARM office in Goma.

The forum, themed “Women’s and Girls’ Rights in the Face of Cultural Challenges,” brought together lawyers, community leaders, and women representatives from churches to discuss the barriers that prevent women and girls from fully enjoying their rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Facilitated by Patrick Kahatwa and Syza Mutumwa, the discussion highlighted challenges such as gender-based violence, cultural practices that undermine women’s rights, and limited access to justice.

Participants engaged in meaningful dialogue and identified practical solutions, including promoting positive masculinity among men, educating women about their legal rights, and encouraging dialogue with traditional leaders to address harmful cultural norms.

The forum empowered participants with knowledge and confidence to advocate for the rights of women and girls within their communities. ALARM remains grateful to its donors and partners whose support continues to advance justice, dignity, and opportunity for women and girls.
