Empowering Youth on Digital Rights: ALARM Hosts Exchange Forum in Goma

On March 4, 2026, African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries (ALARM), through its Peacebuilding Department and Legal Clinic, organized a Youth Rights Exchange Forum at the ALARM office in Goma. The forum focused on the theme “Legal Protection of Youth in the Digital Age.”

Facilitated by Patrick Kahatwa and Syza Mutumwa, the session brought together 25 young participants from churches and universities to learn about their legal rights and responsibilities in the digital space.

Raising Awareness on Digital Safety

As technology continues to shape how young people communicate, learn, and engage with the world, it also exposes them to risks such as cyberbullying, data misuse, and online exploitation. The forum helped participants understand how laws are designed to protect them while still safeguarding their rights to information, education, and freedom of expression.

During the session, facilitators explained key provisions of the Democratic Republic of Congo Digital Code, highlighting both the protections it offers youth and the penalties for digital misconduct.

Participants also learned practical ways to protect themselves online and the importance of using technology responsibly.

Youth Engagement and Knowledge Sharing

The forum encouraged open discussion, allowing participants to ask questions and share experiences related to digital challenges faced by young people today. Their enthusiasm reflected a strong desire to understand the law and become responsible digital citizens.

Participants expressed appreciation for ALARM’s initiative and committed to sharing the knowledge gained with their peers, expanding the impact of the training within their communities.

Looking Ahead

Participants recommended that ALARM continue organizing similar forums, establish regular youth exchange sessions, and create networks that promote learning, personal growth, and responsible digital engagement.

This initiative contributes to the promotion of youth rights and protection against digital offenses, in line with the Democratic Republic of Congo Digital Code enacted in 2023.

ALARM remains grateful to its donors and partners whose support makes such programs possible. Through initiatives like this, young people are empowered with the knowledge needed to move from ignorance to awareness of their legal rights and to contribute positively to their communities in the digital age.
