In anticipation of the 2025 elections, ALARM Burundi conducted two impactful workshops aimed at fostering peace, security, and social cohesion in Burundi — a nation still healing from a turbulent history of political conflict and unrest.
The workshops, held in Kanyosha (Bujumbura Province) and Mpanda (Bubanza Province), brought together a total of 96 participants, including religious leaders, local government officials, political party leaders, and representatives from women’s and youth leagues. These strategic gatherings were part of ALARM’s ongoing efforts to equip community influencers with the tools needed to promote peaceful democratic engagement.

Building Capacity for Democratic Engagement
The workshops centered around a contextual understanding of democracy and its five key pillars, encouraging participants to:
- Define democracy in their local context
- Recognize vulnerabilities during election periods
- Appreciate diversity as a strength for unity and progress
- Identify the root causes of conflict and prevent electoral tensions
- Promote acceptance and cooperation for national development
ALARM’s interactive approach enabled participants to share experiences and develop strategies to foster community resilience before, during, and after the electoral process.

Voices from the Field
Participants shared powerful testimonials that underscored the workshop’s impact:
“I never knew that both the losing and winning parties are equal before the law, and even the President is subject to it. I used to think that winning meant unlimited power,” remarked Ndereyimana Isaac, a political party member.
“For the first time, I understand the purpose of having many political parties. I used to think opposition parties only existed to cause instability,” added Minani Anne, a local administrator.
Their reflections revealed a shift in mindset — a crucial step toward long-term peace and reconciliation.
A Call for Continued Engagement
Local leaders called on ALARM to return for a second round of training post-elections to solidify gains and continue nurturing a culture of unity. Each participant committed to sharing their newly acquired knowledge with their communities, multiplying the impact across Burundi.
ALARM Burundi extends heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to the success of these workshops. Together, we are sowing seeds of peace that will help transform the electoral season from a time of fear into an opportunity for unity and progress.
